Wilbert R Roberts, Jr.

Wilbert Randolph Roberts, Jr. died on September 21, 2021. He was 81.

He was the son of the late Wilbert R. Roberts, Sr. and Anne Finley Roberts.  He was predeceased by a special nephew, Kermit Lee.

Wilbert graduated from Howard High School and received BS and MS degrees from Tennessee State University.   

Wilbert was married for 48 years to Barbara Ann Lindsey Roberts.

Wilbert served Chattanooga Public Schools as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and Director of Special Programs and Student Placement.  He retired in 1994.   Having a love of serving others in a time of need, Wilbert volunteered and worked part-time at Hardwick and Sons Funeral Home where he was a tremendous comfort to bereaved families.

Wilbert served on numerous boards of directors, including the Hamilton County Election Commission and the Chattanooga Housing Authority.   He was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and member of the audioministry.  He was a charter member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.

Wilbert leaves to cherish his memory:  his loving wife, Barbara Lindsey Roberts; his dear mother, Anne Finley Roberts; three devoted sisters,  Anita R. (Burrell) Lee, (Vine Grove, KY),  Mildred R. Anderson, and Ingrid R. Denson;  a special niece:  Karen Denson Hayes, (Marietta, GA);  special nephew, Kelvin Anderson; great nephews, Kenneth Hayes and Christopher Hayes (Marietta, Georgia);  God-children,  DeAndrea and Bobby Berry, (Nashville, TN),  Marethia (Willie) Gholston, Elizabeth McCain Ingram, (Ft. Oglethorpe, GA), Candle Ragland Lockett, (Valdosta, GA), Dave “DJ” Ragland, Jr. (Nashville, TN) , and Diane Watson; adopted brothers and sisters, and a host of cousins, other relatives, and dear friends. 

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 9, 2021,from noon until 1pm, followed by a graveside service atHamilton Memorial Gardens, 5401 Highway 153.   Rev. Dr.William Terry Ladd, III, eulogist, and Rev. Dr. Ernest L. Reid, Jr., officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Wilbert R. Roberts, Jr. to First Baptist Church, 506 E. 8th Street, Chattanooga, TN  37403 or the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org/donate.
