Joyce Cummings Tucker, a Presbyterian pastor, author, and prominent leader in theological education, died on July 12, 2019 in New York City following a brief illness. She lived in Princeton, NJ. Tucker was born July 31, 1941 to John William Cummings and Anita Murray Cummings in Chattanooga, TN. She attended Girls Preparatory School and Duke University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa upon graduation.
Tucker received a Master’s Degree in Religious Education from Yale Divinity School and later a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary awarded her an honorary doctorate for her lifetime of accomplishments serving the Presbyterian Church. Tucker was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1975 and served as Assistant Pastor of John Knox Presbyterian Church in Marietta, GA. She was the co-author of the book Presbyterian Polity for Church Officers, now in its fourth edition. Tucker served as Director of Theological Education for the PC(USA) from 1986 to 1999. She then worked as the Dean of Continuing Education at Princeton Theological Seminary until retiring in 2005.
Tucker is survived by her 2 children, Katherine and Andrew, and 3 grandchildren, Grant, Abby and Will.
